Lake Erie Speedway 2012 Season Fueled By Kwik Fill Continues
Saturday, June 9, 2012, North East, PA – The third race of Lake Erie Speedway’s 2012 Season Fueled by Kwik Fill was a treat for the 6,807 fans in attendance for a Night at the Races Presented by Northwest Savings Bank. The night included all six Lake Erie Speedway divisions with a special appearance by the Lucas Oil Can Am Midget Series and the Casey’s TQ Midget Series.
The INEX Bandoleros were the first race of the night. #3 Jeff Dunfee III took the lead early going into lap 4 and built a commanding lead over #97 Darrin Waldron of Stockton, NY and #32 Wesley McCray of Corry, PA. On lap 5, #5 Lars McElravy of Corry, PA and #6 Dale Lombardo instigated a caution by spinning out just past the start/finish line. With the pace car back on the track to re-start the race, Dunfee, Waldron, and McCray once again held onto the top 3 places. #9 driven by Donald Buell held the fourth place with #24 Matt Mead of Erie, PA, #01 Alexis Bohrer of Harborcreek, PA, and #2 Chase Firestone of Wattsburg, PA following close behind. The race ended with Dunfee coming in first, Waldron in second, and McCray coming in third.
The NASCAR Modifieds were next on the schedule as the second feature race of the night. Roaring into first place at the time the green flag was put in the air were #75 Bob Fisher of North East, PA and #21 Mike Neubauer of Conneaut, OH, passing at almost the exact same time, with Fisher holding a slight lead. Neubauer took the lead at lap 2 with #77 Dave McAvoy of Fredonia, NY in second place. McAvoy and Neubauer were almost an entire turn ahead of the third place, #6t6 Dennis Hagg Jr. going into lap 8. #53 Ron Erhard experienced mechanical issues on lap 9 forcing the race to a short caution. Once the green flag was once again in the air, Neubauer and McAvoy still held on to the top two positions with #00 Adam Kostelnik forcing himself into third place ahead of Hagg. At the beginning of lap 15, #62 Bob McQuinston, #34 Brandon Huffman of Corry, PA, and #17 Eric Bohrer of Harborcreek, PA brought out the caution in turn one. Huffman and Bohrer were then towed off the track by the wrecker service. Once the track was cleared of the caution, the race was back underway with McAvoy holding onto first place and Kostelsnick sneaking into second and holding a heavy lead in front of the third place car #32 Eric McCray of Corry, PA. McAvoy held on to his lead to finish in first place in Saturday's Modifieds feature with Kostelnik coming in second and McCray coming in third.
#47 Scott Wylie kicked off the Plyler Overhead Door Late Models Feature crossing over the start/finish line first with #56 Scott Skora of Eden, NY, #48 Sam Fullone and #65 George Skora III of Eden, NY following close behind. Scott Skora pulled ahead into first, but was quickly put to a stop due to an altercation between 2w Dave Whittaker of Orchard Park, NY and #29 Richard Arndt of Colden, NY causing a caution. Following the first turn after the green flag was raised, #32 Glenn Gault Jr. of Hubbard, OH and #21 Dave Wilson of Hamburg, NY caused another caution after the two cars spun out and Gault was taken to the infield. Back on track, George Skora and Scott Skora took the top two spots at lap three. Wilson was forced into the infield due to smoke coming out of the back end of the car. George Skora took a large lead over Scott Skora who was in second place and #3 Jeff Brown of Hamburg, NY in third place going into lap16. Fullone remained neck and neck with Brown throughout lap 35 in attempt to make his way into third place. Scott Skora came in second place and Brown pulled out a third place finish, with Fullone close behind in fourth.
When the green flag was waved at the start of the INEX Legends feature, #9x Cody Myers came out of the gate strong, but was quickly put to a stop due to #5A Brandon Abbot and #69 Terry Lindstrom having difficulties on the track and causing a caution. The race was restarted after Abbot was removed from the track. With the green flag in the air again, #98 Brett Coon of Elma, NY and #21 Patrick Lyden of Erie, PA battled during laps 3-7 for the first place position. Lyden, #62 Jason Knox and Coon were in the three top positions until a caution forced by #08 Nick Sowa spinning out on lap 10. Starting the INEX Legends division race up for a third time Saturday night, the green flag was waved and the top six cars were bumper to bumper going into lap 13, with Knox in the lead. #76 John Bacon and Myers created the third caution of the race spinning into one another on turn one of lap 14. Myers was taken off the track and the race was once again underway. With nine total cautions in the third race of the night, #01 Matt Pappa took home his first, first place win at Lake Erie Speedway with Knox in second and Lyden in third.
